Champagne Day

Woo hoo!!! This is the last blog of 2016 and I definitely plan to celebrate with champagne tonight. One of the neighbor ladies is having a party and although I'm sure I'll be home by 10, it will be fun to celebrate with friends. I haven't seen my buddies since the 19th, so we'll definitely have some catching up to do.

And after much thought and few ideas, I've decided to continue the blog, but only on Sundays. That way I can make them a little more interesting than, "Today I blah blah blah." Of course, the hard part will be remembering what I did during the week. We'll just have to see how it goes. But tomorrow is Sunday, so I'll be here. And now to all my faithful readers (and occasional ones, too)...

Bacon Day

This one really should have been when Rob was here because we ate bacon every morning. But I made the sacrifice and bought some this morning. I also bought some black eyed peas since I have to eat them on New Year's Day. So for lunch I had black eyed peas with bacon and it was perfect. All I needed was Mom's cornbread to make it even better. Okay, so Mom used Jiffy mix... it's still not the same if I have to make it.

I visited Brianna this morning and heard all about her trip to Grandpa's in San Antonio for Christmas. She was very nervous since he wants to adopt her and she hasn't really ever been around his girlfriend and her son. Also for Christmas day there were lots of other relatives there that she didn't know. But she said it went pretty well except that she doesn't like her grandpa's girlfriend and he makes Brianna call her Grandma, which makes matters worse. I explained that the girlfriend is probably a little jealous because now she'll have to share Grandpa. And I added that maybe they'll warm up to each other slowly. But I was especially happy to hear that she and the girlfriend will be having family therapy on Skype. Baby steps.

Tick Tock Day

Tick Tock Day reminds us only 2 days are remaining in the year and to use them wisely. I chose to take down my Christmas tree and other accoutrements. It took most of the day, but since I've decided to go to a table tree starting next year, I'm so excited that I filled up two bins for give away next November. I've gradually been cutting back, but this one was the hardest. Choosing ornaments to part with was difficult. Obviously the really big ones had to go, but I definitely kept all the sentimental ones, whether or not they were the prettiest. Ornaments that I painted when I was young, some that Andrea made for me when she was young, and all of the family photo frames I made were definite keepers. I can't ever throw those out, so whoever is in charge of my belongings after I've moved to a better place will have to make that call.

Chocolate Candy Day

No surprise... another favorite. I had two Christmas gifts of chocolate, peppermint bark from my cousin, Emily, and dark chocolate covered walnuts from a friend. The nuts probably don't count as candy, although it certainly is to me. But just to be covered, I ate both. Let's face it, I have to get rid of this stuff before Jan. 2.

We just set a high temperature record for the fifth straight day... all above 80. Although I was a little annoyed on Christmas, I've realized that one of the reasons I came back to the Houston area was to escape the cold. And it's hardly been miserably hot. So now I've pulled out some hot weather clothes and am enjoying the break. Actually, the next three days will be cooler, but then back up into the upper 70's. And I won't complain.

Fruitcake Day

I came so close to making it until the end of the year, but didn't. I have had no fruitcake, have none now, and never will. So nothing got celebrated today except another day of leisure. Okay, I did do some laundry, but that was it and I'm proud!

And just so you know, as we approach the end of 2016, I'm at a serious crossroads about this blog. I'll be thrilled that the daily celebrations will end (as I may have gained a pound or two because of them), but am stumped as to what to do now. I debated a random act of kindness each day, but decided you aren't supposed to be kind so you can write about it. Plus it would probably be really hard. Then I thought about a word of the day and realized that's pretty boring. My third choice is to just write one or two days a week because my life just really isn't that interesting. So at this point... still thinking.

Candy Cane Day

Well, who doesn't have a candy can laying around after Christmas? I don't love 'em, but did have a bite of one after dinner.

Rob left early this morning and although I was sad to see him go, it's awfully nice to start getting back into my routine. I was really ready to get back to exercise classes today, but the Y was closed and yoga is canceled for the week... the week I need it the most! My goal is to get the Christmas stuff packed away and my closet cleaned out, as well as some other odd jobs. But it sure feels great to have NO obligations for five days. We'll see how long it takes me to get bored.

Christmas Day

We had a perfect day today! Rob and I picked up Kitty about 10:30 and then set out. First we stopped at Cathy and Mike's house where they were with their five children and maybe 12 grandchildren (lots of kids... I didn't count). We had a very nice visit with all of them between their breakfast and Christmas dinner.  Next stop... Sharon and Jim's. Sharon was cooking in preparation for their big meal with their kids and grandkids, but Mary and her son, Todd, were there, too. We had appetizers and an adult beverage (not Rob because he was our driver). Our last stop was Charles and Adrienne's house where it was so very quiet compared to yesterday. Trudy was there with her three kids and two grandbabies. Adrienne had made lentil soup, tortilla soup, and some incredible cornbread. We ate there and sat outside by the pool before heading home. It's so nice to spend Christmas with family, although we did miss Joe, Mary Jane and their gang who are all on the west coast. And then of course, there's Charles and Karen in Tanzania. A merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Christmas Eve

What a wonderful day Rob and I had! Cousin Charles hosted the whole family for Christmas Eve, with just a few missing. There was a face painter for the kids, a balloon animal maker, and a magician and I have to say the whole day was magic. Granted the temperature had to be 80, but at least the kids could play outside without getting cold. Adrienne puts on quite a spread, everything was amazing, and they even loaded us up with leftovers to bring home.  Aunt Kitty treats us as her own and it's absolutely the next best thing to being with Mom and Dad.

The Texans play tonight (fingers crossed) and tomorrow there will even be more Lyons family fun. Can't wait!!!

Festivus

Festivus is the day celebrated by George Constanza's father on Seinfeld. He called it "Festivus for the rest of us!" A Festivus Miracle is a frequent if unimpressive miracle. And we had a miracle today, but I think it was actually impressive. Rob came in this afternoon and we went out to dinner with my friend, Patti, who went to high school with Mary Helen, and her husband. We had good food, beverages, and conversation. As we were walking back to the car, I tripped on a small step in the sidewalk, but there was a maybe 12 or 13-year-old boy standing there and I caught myself by putting my hand on his shoulder. And to make it all better, his dad even told me that another son had also tripped in the same spot.  Here's to Festivus!

Mike Frank's 80th Birthday

What a great party tonight to celebrate Cathy's husband, Mike's 80th birthday. It was at Federal Grill and was amazing. His children all spoke about what a great father he is and others (including me) also talked about what an incredible role model he is. I told him that whenever I don't want to exercise, I think of him and his dedication to taking care of himself, and then I go. He has been a wonderful husband and father and is one of the greatest men I know. This photo is with his daughter. Amanda, from his first marriage and of course, Cathy, his rock. I'm so blessed to have them in my life and wish Mike another 80 years. If anyone can do it, he can!

Winter Solstice

Oops! I jumped the gun yesterday and today is actually National Crossword Puzzle Day. But I had yoga this morning and didn't have time for two. But as far as Winter Solstice goes... our winter ended yesterday and today it was a beautiful day, sunny and 71 degrees. And nary a soul is complaining.

We went back to Krause House this afternoon for more tee shirt painting. We were in a classroom today instead of the cafeteria and it was much less chaotic. One of our ladies suggested it may just be due to their mindset in the classroom versus the cafeteria. Whatever... it was a great deal more pleasant (the newspapers were for covering the tables).

Crossword Puzzle Day

I normally work one puzzle every morning, but to celebrate today, I worked two! The rest of my morning went downhill after that. I had to make a run to Costco and I wanted to get gas at their pumps first. All lanes were full, so I stopped to purview the situation. When I saw a lane opening up, I headed over and then heard a loud bang. I was bumfuzzled as I couldn't imagine what had just happened... until I saw the car immediately to my right that I had hit. This has been my biggest fear as I age. Not major accidents on the freeway, but rather fender benders in parking lots. Let the games begin! The Asian lady who I hit really wanted to call the police, but fortunately the attendant came over and said that all we needed to do was exchange information. I told her that I took full responsibility, but she was so wary. I finally got away, finished my shopping, and came home to file the claim. Then I called her to explain that my insurance would handle everything. I did dent her front fender and only scraped the bumper on my car. I haven't filed an auto insurance claim since maybe 1982, so was happy to learn there's an app for that. I upload photos, they make an estimate and send me a check. Sounds like a plan!

I spent the afternoon at Krause House painting tee shirts with the girls, which was just what the doctor ordered. Then home to walk the dogs before heading to a neighbor's for a glass of wine. Now I'm happy to be home and looking forward to bedtime. Roller coaster of a day!

Oatmeal Muffin Day

Well, I certainly fell into this one. At yoga this morning someone brought oatmeal brownies for the class. I realize that brownies aren't muffins, but it was close enough for me. And truth be told, regular brownies are much better, but I don't look a gift horse in the mouth (especially at Christmas). I also went to my exercise class at the Y today because I have to atone for all my eating transgressions over the last week. And I really felt accomplished afterwards!

This evening one of the Winettes had a holiday happy hour at her home and wouldn't let anyone bring anything. She really wowed us as she made all of the hors d'oeuvres and they were amazing. She also provided all of the wine, which in this crowd isn't just a bottle or three. This may have to be the beginning of another tradition. I love this place!

Answer the Phone Like Buddy the Elf Day

When the phone rang, I had to say, "Penny, the elf. What's your favorite color?" Fortunately, Kay was the only one who called and she doesn't even react to my crazy days. It could have been an embarrassing situation, but it helped that it fell on a Sunday.

The big news here is winter!!! Yesterday it was over 80 degrees and when I went out with the dogs this morning, it was 34 with a wind chill of 22. The wind was very strong and I was completely bundled up, as was Simon. But Glory absolutely loves the cold! She has a pretty heavy coat and wanted to go in and out all day. And our afternoon walk wasn't a whole lot better because the wind is still kicking butt. Tomorrow will be worse, but then the warm up begins. Man, I don't know why all those people in the north don't move south. This sure makes me appreciate summer a whole lot more. So if you're in very cold weather tonight, as most of the country is, stay inside!!!

I took Brianna her Christmas presents today and I have rarely seen such joy on a teenager's face. All I gave her was a pink fluffy robe, a stuffed dog, a calendar, and a pair of socks, but she acted like I gave her a pot of gold. She immediately put the robe on and as we colored, she held the dog the whole time. It really feels good to make someone that happy and for that, I'm blessed.

Wright Brothers Day

In 1903 on December 17, Wilbur and Orville made their famous flight at Kitty Hawk. My hat's off to these guys as well as all inventors and innovators. Gotta love 'em!

I met Allison and Roy at Federal Grill for lunch today. We're definitely old now because we had to move into the bar area due to the loud noise level in the dining room. We couldn't even hear each other talk. But the food was great, as usual, plus bottomless mimosas and a giant chocolate chip cookie with three scoops of ice cream. I shouldn't have eaten dinner, but of course, I did. Monday I'm going to two exercise classes to atone.

Chocolate-covered Anything Day

Katie, bar the door! So much to choose from, but I aimed for something a little healthy and bought dark chocolate-covered walnuts. And I wasn't disappointed. With a glass of red wine, perfection!

Our large dinner group has been put on hold until after the holidays, but a few renegades decided to go to dinner in a small group for a change (okay, I was the instigator) and it was wonderful. Having a meal with six people is sometimes so much more pleasant than dinner with 16 to 20. Better service, conversation, and ease of hearing definitely has its strong points. We had a great time with outstanding food and wine... a perfect meal!

Free Shipping Day

This came at the perfect time! I'd been procrastinating about ordering a gift for Mary Ellen, Mom's 91-year-old cousin who now lives in Missouri with her niece. So this was perfect since Harry & David was one of the free sites. And that was all the motivation I needed. Mary Ellen... check.

And I was absolutely thrilled that I had nothing to do for the rest of the day. I did run a couple of errands this morning and then binged on The Crown on Netflix this afternoon. I love history in entertainment form even though I have to realize that I can't believe it all. Too bad Queen Elizabeth didn't write it. But it's great!

Yoga Day

Today is the day one of the original yoga teachers was born. And I went to yoga this morning! She's giving us new poses to do during the holidays to reduce stress and help our digestive systems. I feel like a pretzel sometimes (okay, often) but always feel better when it's over. We're trying to get a new class started after the first of the year on Fridays so we can go more than once a week. That will help a lot because once a week isn't enough and most of us don't do it at home. Of course my problem is that when I get down on the floor, Glory thinks it's playtime. So I play with her and forget what I'm supposed to be doing.

I mentored my fifth grader this afternoon for the last time until January. I hate to say it, but I am excited about a two week break. And in a few minutes, Bella will be here for her last tutoring session before her math final tomorrow. Then I'll have some time to do nothing. Yay! Actually next week will be busy with Christmas happenings, but the week after Christmas will be my wind down time. And that is definitely something to look forward to!

Ice Cream Day

I know... doesn't sound right in December, but it's true. This is also National Cocoa Day, but since it's been the 70's here all day, I just didn't want to drink cocoa. I didn't really want to buy any ice cream either, but I lucked out. One of the Winettes had a wrapping party this afternoon. She made a big pot of soup (thinking it would be colder today) and we brought over our gifts to wrap, along with wine and munchies. This was definitely the beginning of a new tradition. I only had a few presents to wrap for Brianna, my 15-year-old mentee, but I really don't like wrapping anymore. So one of my friends did it for me! We ate, drank, wrapped, and played a game... it was great! But back to the ice cream. I asked if anyone had ice cream at home and was actually surprised to learn how many did. But my closest neighbor had some Weight Watchers bars in her freezer and after all I had eaten, decided that was the best choice. Fun day!!!

Green Monday

This one was new to me, but it's the second busiest online shopping day before Christmas after Cyber Monday. It's always the second Monday in December, so I felt obligated to shop. I ordered some long underwear in preparation for my New York trip in February as well as some steps for Simon to get on the bed. His arthritis seems to be getting a little worse and even though I have a bench at the end of the bed for both dogs to jump up on, I think steps are the inevitable next step (get it?).

I tutored Thomas this afternoon for the last time before second semester. He's not going to have any more homework and his excitement level for Christmas is kicking in. He told me that his family is going to spend the first week in San Diego with one set of grandparents and the second week in Florida with the others.  Tough life for a kid!

Noodle Ring Day

I thought this was just about ring-shaped pasta, but it can also be any pasta formed into a ring. So I took my leftover shrimp from wine night and placed it into a ring of edamame pasta (and I finally finished it... no more of that for me). Because of the shrimp, it was delicious!

I tutored Sharon's granddaughter, Bella, this afternoon and Emily, her mom, brought me a bottle of wine and a tin of homemade cookies. I'm going to try to save them until Rob gets here for Christmas, but it's dicey because they're really good! My doctor told me it's okay to gain five to seven pounds over the holidays as long as you lose it afterwards. Sounds so simple, but I know better, so will try to keep my added poundage under five. We'll see how that pans out.

Dewey Decimal System Day

Today is Melvil Dewey's birthday and apparently the Dewey Decimal System is way more important than I would have thought. It's been in use since 1876 and is the most widely used classification system in the world,. The DDC is found in 135 countries around the world and translated into 30 different languages. Who knew?

Today was also Family Day at Krause House and I spent over two hours there this afternoon with Brianna. We decorated cupcakes, played games, and I watched as she had fun in the two bouncy houses set up in the gym. It really was a great time for both of us. I can tell she's always so proud to have someone there for her and I love for her to be happy!

Weary Willie Day

Turns out, it was not what I was thinking. Men of a certain age whose willies get weary are not what this day is about. But it's actually still funny... This holiday was named for the character made famous by Emmett Kelly, who was born on this day in 1898. Weary Willie Day celebrates the art of clowning and the impact that it has had on our lives. I'll just bet you didn't know that! Clowns have gotten a bad rap recently, but it seems to have died down. I've never understood the fear of clowns, maybe because of Bozo and Clarabell, but I hope kids can get back to loving clowns like Ronald McDonald. They're supposed to be fun!

We celebrated two birthdays at dinner tonight and it was a great time. Good food, good wine, and good friends can only equal a fun for all. There were 18 of us and as we were leaving, the family behind us said they really wanted to buy us all a round of wine, so obviously they were enjoying our antics. We're not a subdued group and it's nice to know the people around us are entertained, too.

Brownie Day

I had such good intentions for today. I didn't want to make brownies or even buy a package at the grocery store because I didn't want them in my house. So my plan was to go to a bakery and buy just one. And this is what I found. It's huge! I debated for a short time, but it was past time for lunch and I was hungry, so bit the bullet and bought it.  It was a terrible mistake but I'm happy to report that I did cut it into fourths and only ate one piece after lunch. However that one piece was so good that I know it had to be at the very least 500 calories. And then after wine night, I came home and ate half of another piece. I'm still not quite down to my pre-Thanksgiving weight and I'm certain I'll be back up a bit tomorrow. But my doctor did just tell me that it's normal to gain five to seven pounds during the holidays as long as we lose it again afterwards. So I'm going with that!

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

In 2016, we recognize the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7. There were more than 3,500 Americans who died or were wounded on that solemn day. I very recently saw a woman on TV who was a child then and remembers actually seeing the faces of the pilots in the fighter planes. I suppose I've heard that before but it never hit me like it did this time. It's hard to imagine that she even survived. It's just a reminder to always remember what happened that day and how it shaped our country.

My happy news today is that I got a new electric fireplace/media center and just in the nick of time. The next few days will be very cold here (by Houston standards) and I need all the heat I can get. My circulation seems to get worse every year and so I'm thrilled to have a place to warm my hands whenever I need to. Just hoping this won't drive my electric bill up, but I may just bite the bullet and pay up. And I'm going to New York in February?

Microwave Oven Day

Oh my goodness, what would we do without them? I use mine almost every day of the week and I'm so grateful for it. Remembering the days of the earliest TV dinners that had to be baked in the oven and, let's face it, tasted like crap compared to today's frozen foods, I think microwaves are one of the best inventions of modern times. I celebrated today by making frozen mashed cauliflower, which I added some horseradish to, for an absolutely delicious vegetable. I even made it at Thanksgiving and am proud to report that Rob, who very rarely eats veggies, liked it. I was thrilled!

I went to the elementary school to mentor Aiden, the second grader, this morning just as his class was headed to recess. Normally he doesn't have a problem missing recess, but today was the first beautiful day we've had in a long time and I could tell that he was conflicted. I asked him if he wanted to go outside and he was hesitant to say yes. But I knew and told him it was no problem for me, so off he went. I'm guessing his teacher was probably thrilled for him to get out and run off some energy... he definitely has trouble sitting still.

Blue Jeans Day

I celebrate this day every day from November through March (with days off for temps above 70) and today was no exception. Add a sweatshirt or flannel shirt and sneakers for my total winter look... I'm turning into a hippie.

However, I dressed up for our holiday luncheon today. This was my table, but they're all decorated differently with even a Hanukkah table or two. It's a sight to see!

Then when I went to tutor Thomas this afternoon, he asked me if I had on makeup. I generally don't wear it if I don't have anyplace special to go (remember the previous hippie comment), but because of the luncheon, he got me. I told him I was surprised that he noticed and he said that he likes it. Oh dear, now do I have to wear makeup for an 8-year-old?

Cookie Day

I was excited about this one, but didn't plan ahead. Kay and I went out to lunch before heading to the theater in Houston, but the restaurant didn't have cookies on their dessert menu (although we did find something else we liked). So my plan was to stop on the way home to pick something up. However, it poured down rain all day and I just wanted to get home as fast as possible. I had some Girl Scout cookies in my freezer which obviously aren't my favorites or they wouldn't still have been in the freezer. So I had one after a small dinner because I really wasn't hungry after lunch.

The show, Honky Tonk Angels Holiday Spectacular, was good but not great. And the theater was freezing so we were both pretty miserable. I also had to get home to take the dogs out because when it's raining they won't go out in the backyard. So more cold and rain and now I'm toasty inside. More rain tomorrow, so we'll have to play this game again in the morning. Not sure if this is harder on me or the dogs, but we manage.

Roof Over Your Head Day

This one was created as a day to be thankful for what you have, starting with the roof over your head.  There are many things that we have that we take for granted and do not stop to appreciate how fortunate we are for having them. The previous sentence was copied from the website, but I'm happy to add that I have never taken this for granted. As a matter of fact, I thank God regularly not only for the roof over my head, but for my mom and dad who provided my education and work ethic so that I could have a nice home. Unlike many kids today, we started at the bottom and worked our way up. Small apartments with several roommates to slightly larger with only one roommate to living alone in a nice apartment. I still remember when I moved into an apartment with 600 sq. ft. I thought I was rich!

I've also been lucky by buying low and selling high while renovating and decorating to make my homes exactly what I wanted. And for all of this, I've always thanked God for my many blessings. And now in my retirement home (hopefully my last), I couldn't be happier. God is good!

International Sweater Vestival

This one seems weird, but I wore a sweater vest to our Friday evening dinner. Luckily it's cold enough now to do that (upper 50's) so it felt good to finally be pulling out a few winter clothes.

I stayed home today to try and get my outdoor Christmas decorations up before the rains came. I felt like this was the best day to do it because Elia, my cleaning lady, was here and able to check on me periodically to make sure I didn't fall off the step stool. There once was a time when ladders were the problem, but I've been demoted to step stools. Anyway, I never know how it's all going to look until nightfall, but I'm happy to report that it looks pretty damn good. But since the rain has started, I can't post a photo until another day.

I also stayed home because I'd ordered an electric fireplace/entertainment center from Costco that  was scheduled for delivery this afternoon. When I ordered my TV from Costco, they came in, set it up, and made sure it was working, so I was really excited for this delivery. But I'll be damned if UPS only unloaded three big boxes into my garage. Thankfully Elia could help me (or truth be told, I helped her) get them into the house. We started unpacking the boxes only to find that the entire thing has to be assembled. Dammit! So I made a call to my handyman and am waiting for him to call back and let me know when he can put it together. And then, that's another pic I'll post. I feel like a kid getting a big Christmas present that Mom and Dad can't put together.

Eat a Red Apple Day

You're never going to believe how this one worked out (or maybe you will).  The Winettes went out this evening and since this is also National Pie Day, I had every intention of ordering a piece of pie for dessert to share with the table. So imagine my surprise when I saw that apple martinis were on special today. One of the ladies suggested that I ask for a little red food coloring to be added, but I wasn't going to be that picky. So when I saw a piece of red apple actually floating in the drink, I was so excited! And I might add, it was quite tasty. I only had one as a before dinner drink and then a glass of wine with my food (we actually all order only appetizers on wine night for some unknown reason), so it was a perfect meal. I just might have to try that again sometime.

Meth Awareness Day

I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one, but here goes. I'm aware of meth and its effects thanks to being a middle school teacher. In Heber Springs we had some frightening presentations during Red Ribbon Week every year complete with photos. The saddest time was when the presenter asked for questions and one of the students asked what to do if your parent is using. And I have to admit, judging from some of the parents I saw, that child was only one of many. Meth is a serious problem in Arkansas as well as all over the country, but thankfully, not in Katy. And I have no clue what can be done about it. Maybe the kids who live with meth users will realize what a horrible drug it is. Time will tell.

My day was busy... yoga, Costco run, mentoring,  tutoring, and two dog walks. And I'm happy we're back to fall weather so I can at least wear long pants and closed shoes for a while. I was in short pants and sandals yesterday. This is crazy weather!

National Day of Giving

I should read ahead... didn't know that the national day was only two days later than the world day. But I generally make a donation to Krause House in December so just did it a little early. And there's certainly nothing wrong with that.

And now for a funny story. I went to the elementary school to mentor Aiden, the second grader, today and as usual, we read a Captain Underpants book. This series is actually intended for a little older audience, just judging by the vocabulary, but Aiden loves them and I do most of the reading, so I think it's good for him. In our current book, there's a reoccurring theme about Uranus and the boys in the book snicker every time it's mentioned. So I asked Aiden if he knew anything about Uranus. When he said no, I decided to be the one to explain it to him. Once I started, I realized it was going to be a little more difficult than I initially anticipated. So the first thing I had to teach him was the anus. At first I hesitated and then just jumped right in. I said it's the hole in your butt that the poop comes out of and so Uranus sounds like "your anus." I'm proud to say he thought that was the funniest thing he's ever heard. So he got all the jokes after that and I was so proud! And I realized at that minute that's the kind of grandma I'd have been. Teach them all the nasty stuff... what a hoot!

Cyber Monday

I had no desire to participate in this one due to my upcoming travel plans, but when Kay and I learned we can get deals on hotel rooms and show tickets today, I changed my mind. We haven't really resolved anything yet due to exercise class, volunteer work, and tutoring. We haven't been at home at the same times all day, but plan on getting it done tonight. Who knew these things would be included in Cyber Monday? But I'm damn glad about it!

Gratitude Month

This one is practically a miracle! Yesterday afternoon I was thinking that I really didn't have anything to look forward to now. Of course Rob is coming for Christmas and that will be fun, but it's not major. Then, out of the blue, Kay called me last night and said that since I'd been such a fun travel buddy when we went to New Orleans, she and Jack were inviting me to go to New York with them in February. I asked, as one would, why New York in February? She said it's because she loves cold weather. Silly girl! But naturally I said yes and so we now have a trip booked from Feb 19-24, staying in the Times Square area, and plan to see several Broadway shows. How cool is that?

Then this afternoon I went to have burgers with three Katy friends and we all planned a trip to Panama in September. And now I have two major things to look forward to and I'm very grateful!

World Day of Giving

I made a donation today to the Fort Bend County Child Advocates. My work with CASA in Arkansas was difficult but probably one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. I don't have the stamina or the courage to continue that work here in Texas, so next best thing is to donate money. The girls I work with at Krause House are all in the foster care system and sadly, it is horribly underfunded. So every little bit helps.

I visited with Brianna this afternoon and she was so excited because her grandpa had called this morning to tell her she'll be spending a week with her grandma and him at Christmas. And that makes be so happy!

Tonight I got together with four neighbor ladies and we ordered pizzas from a new place called Papa Murphy's. They make the pizzas, we picked them up and cooked them at home. I'm not really a big pizza person but these were some of the best I've ever had. Everyone agreed so we'll definitely be doing this again sometime. You just can't have too many good places to eat in your immediate neighborhood if you ask me.

Buy Nothing Day

This one was easier because it was a travel day, but I did it! Normally, I'd have been online looking for deals, but not today. I'm happy to report that it was an uneventful travel day for me as well as Joe and Mary Jane (at least I think it was for them because they made it home safely). I picked up my little pups and then we went for a long walk because I'm waaaay behind in my daily steps. It's a good way to ease back into the routine. I'm so appreciative for Mary Jane's fantastic dinner and Rob's hosting. At our Thanksgiving meal we thought about if Mom and Dad ever wondered whether or not we'd continue to get together once we were left to our own devices. Actually before they were gone, I was doubtful myself and yet now I'm so grateful that we've become so close. I'm certain that their deaths contributed to our need to continue old traditions as best we could (even though Charles and Karen are far away, they're always in our hearts and conversation).  So thank you Frank and Boots!

Thanksgiving Day

It was a perfect day in Germantown, TN (maybe not sunny, but okay temp wise). We watched the parade this morning, which I love, during which we got ready for an early dinner at noon. Mary Jane brought a turkey roll wrapped in bacon plus all the sides and I made mashed cauliflower with horseradish. Maybe mine was frozen and easy to make, but at least I contributed a tiny bit. Afterwards we watched the Cowboys, who played a great game and we spoke of Dad many times. And then we ate again which was the plan all along so I could get some leftovers (I'm leaving in the morning). I love my family, even those far away!

Cashew Day

How lucky can you be? Rob keeps nuts in his pantry, including cashews, so he and I shared a small bag and I celebrated the day!

Actually the whole day was fun and worthy of celebration. We went to lunch at his favorite burger place and I was worried because he regularly posts pics on Facebook of their decadently artery clogging, high calorie burgers. But I didn't complain because I ordered a grilled salmon burger with soup and it was amazing! Can't wait to go back during my next visit.

Joe and Mary Jane came in mid-afternoon and we immediately melted back into our routine of visiting, reminiscing, laughing, and just catching up. But tomorrow's a new day and another big eating day... love it!

Go For a Ride Day

On this day we are to celebrate the freedom that the development of transportation has afforded us. I was afraid it meant I had to ride a bike, but was happy to learn that any mode of transportation would do. So I took a ride to the airport for my flight to Memphis. And then as Rob and I were headed to the grocery store from the airport, he took a route he wasn't sure of and said we would just go see where it took us (sounded a lot like Dad).

For dinner we went to his friends, Brian and Christina's house for their Thanksgiving dinner with other family and friends. Christina is quite the cook and served turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato soufflé, mac and cheese, and green beans for a little color. Then for dessert she'd made a chocolate cream pie, coconut cream pie, and Oreo cheesecake. Oh my goodness, she is amazing! Everything that I had was delicious although I did limit myself to just one dessert. Can't say the same for others, but who's counting?

World Hello Day

This day is to emphasize that conflicts should be resolved through communication rather than the use of force. Participants verbally greet ten people or more as an expression of the importance of personal communication in preserving peace. So this isn't really something that's a problem in my world, but I made a point of saying hello to more than 10 people. Most were at my exercise class or while walking the dogs, but I did actually speak to more than I normally would have because I was conscious of it. And I'm going to try harder every day from now on. Sometimes I get involved in my own little world and fail to notice others. And today was a good kick in the pants for me.

I also tutored Thomas this afternoon and his dad was home which is out of the ordinary. He pitched a fit, crying and saying he was just too tired, but his dad eventually got him to sit down for 30 minutes. We only played math games on the iPad and he got involved, but I find it interesting that he has never done that when dad wasn't home. Fortunately this is a rare occurrence.

I'm leaving for Memphis in the morning and may be a little lax in my blogging, but I promise to do my best.

Universal Children's Day

I visited one of my children today... Brianna at Krause House. During our discussion about the election and other subjects she said that she's afraid to be an adult (she's 15). At first I laughed, but then realized she was very serious. When I asked why, she replied that she's afraid of driving, getting a job, living on her own, etc. I explained that she didn't have to worry about all those things now and with each passing year she'll be less afraid. I also told her that she doesn't have to drive until she's ready and that many kids today are putting it off. I also stressed the importance of establishing a good relationship with her grandpa so that he and his wife can be her support system. That way she won't have to shoulder all those burdens on her own and she'll have someone to turn to when she faces an obstacle. I think she's worried about aging out of the foster care system and hopefully I gave her some insight to press on with less fear. At least I hope so.

Family Volunteer Day

This afternoon I went to Krause House with some women in my Heritage Grand family. The girls made cards for our servicemen and I have to admit, I was quite impressed with their thoughtfulness. It was also sad as some girls wrote about being in foster care and never seeing their families again. I only hope that the girls who wrote the cards and the men and women who receive them both benefit from this activity.

On another note, the results of the election for our Board of Directors were released this afternoon and of the two friends I had running, one made it and one didn't. Both are in the Winettes and I'm a little glad that we don't meet again until the Thursday after Thanksgiving. I love them both and feel that they will both be generous to the other, but I hate how it turned out. What can you do?

Mickey Mouse Day

Today we commemorate the birth of that ever lovable mouse that was once a rabbit called Oswald. It was back in 1927 while under contract to Universal Studios that Walt Disney first sketched a floppy eared bunny that later became Mickey Mouse. So how many of you knew about Oswald? Certainly not me!

The beginnings of winter finally crept in this afternoon. Don't know how long it will last, but at least I can put the shorts away for a while. And I got to wear a jacket to dinner! We went to a Benihana-like restaurant with our dinner group and had a great time. They always give us the party room and let us order from the lunch menu which really only means lower prices. We love that place!

World Kindness Week

This seemed like a pretty positive thing to celebrate and I actually did it before even knowing what I was going to celebrate today. I was in line at Trader Joe's this morning and noticed a young girl in the next checkout line with only two items. She had on a uniform of some sort so I assumed she was on her way to work. I asked her if she'd like to go in front of me and I couldn't believe how relieved she looked. She thanked me profusely and then explained that the muffins she was buying were for her coworkers because this was her last day. I really thought she was about to cry, leading me to believe she'd been asked to leave. The checker asked what her plans were and she responded that she had a second interview today with some place I'd never heard of and was also considering Carrabba's. I told her that Carrabba's was my favorite restaurant and I hoped she landed there. Between the checker, who also offered words of encouragement, and me, I think we made her day a little brighter. And before she left, she thanked me again for letting her go in front of me. Sometimes we just never realize how much a small favor can brighten the life of another person. I need to be more aware of the people around me and do what I can to make their day a little better.

Button Day

I wore a shirt with buttons today and still have a button box (although I've rarely ever needed one). The major day today is Fast Food Day, but after my New Orleans trip, I didn't dare even walk into a fast food restaurant. Even their healthy choices aren't as good as what I can make at home.  So Button Day was a lame second best.

I mentored my fifth grader and tutored Thomas this afternoon. And I have to admit, although I don't really understand why, he's memorizing his multiplication facts much easier than he mastered addition. And believe you me, he has yet to master it. But he is improving. I gave him a mixed worksheet today and was pretty surprised at what he was able to do. His initial reaction is to say he doesn't know, but if I coax him just a tiny bit, he's got it. Example: 15 divided by 3 equals what? All I have to say is 3 times what is 15 and he gets it. Maybe one day he'll do that on his own. In the meantime, I'm earning my pay!

America Recycles Day

What a coinkydink! Today was my recycling day and I love that we can do this. I'm an avid recycler and I don't really understand why anyone who has curbside pickup is not. I mean, how hard is it to put something into the recycle bin instead of the trash? Here we don't even have to separate it, although I would gladly. Lazy people are one of my pet peeves.

Today was actually kids' day for me. First I mentored Aidan, my second grader. We finished another book in the Captain Underpants series and I'm getting to be quite the expert on the guy. Home for an hour, then off again for Promise to Read, the once a year program during which adults in the community read to elementary classes. I was assigned to a different school and read to two different classes. In the second grade class there was a character named D.W. I pronounced W as dubya and was immediately corrected by one of the children. "It's double-u," he said. The teacher quickly jumped in and said that I had a Texas accent and that was fine. But believe you me, I didn't do it again. Home again for another hour and then off to tutor Thomas because I missed yesterday. I really enjoyed today although I would have really loved a day of rest first. Thursday will be my slow day... yay!

Birthday Celebration #3, The End

Well, I think I can safely say a good time was had by all. None of us see each other on a regular basis anymore, so the best part was reconnecting and catching up with old friends. There's already talk of a repeat performance next year. First I'll have to get rid of all this excess poundage I packed on. Until today I'm pretty sure I didn't have one bite of fruit or vegetables, so I'm looking forward to getting back on track. Kay and I gambled every night and I'm happy to report I broke even and Kay came home with extra cash.

As much fun as it was, I'm happy to be home with my little family. We will definitely sleep well tonight!

Birthday Celebration #3, Part 2

We didn't really do anything significant yesterday other than  eat, drink, and laugh. Fortunately I learned my drinking lesson on Friday, so got most of my calories from food. Everyone is leaving this afternoon except Kay, Jack, and me. So Kay and I will probably spend a good bit of time at the casino. I'm up $60 and Kay has won over $200 (she's a big better and I'm not). So looking forward to more fun today. We're all meeting for brunch now so the high caloric day begins again and I'm not complaining.

Birthday Celebration #3

I tried to post last night, but the connection was so slow, I gave up. We all arrived safe and sound yesterday afternoon and met up in the hotel bar. I presented everyone with their party favor... a purple insulated glass imprinted with "Penny's 29th Annual 40th Birthday" along with the date and New Orleans. Then we all moved to dinner at a little craft brewery, after which we split into smaller groups. My group went to Harrah's for a little gambling. I lost $21, but since that was $1 over my limit, I was done. So proud of myself!

And now we're off to greet the day. Not sure what's in store because we're just going to wing it, but I'm sure the fun will continue. And I probably won't post again until tomorrow morning. So have a great day everyone!

Vanilla Cupcake Day

I couldn't pass this one up, so stopped in at my favorite bakery for a quickie cupcake. Although I shouldn't be using up calories today because tomorrow we begin birthday celebration #3. I'm going to New Orleans with 14 of my closest friends to relive the past. We went on my 40th birthday and the next three or four years as well. As soon as I got back to town I started hearing rumblings of a reunion trip, so here we go!

I can't promise that I'll stay on course with the blog, but I'll try. And I'll be home on Monday so can get back in the groove then. I'm so excited!

My Birthday

This was one of the best birthdays I've had in years! I wanted to jump out of a plane on my 50th, but all the friends I recruited petered out before the day and I didn't want to do it alone. When I hit 60, I didn't care about it anymore. But I guess it's been nagging at me ever since and this was just as good. A little scary, but so exhilarating! Four friends went with me  (with seven cheerleaders), but I had to go first. We each flew two flights of one minute each, which doesn't seem like much, but believe me... it was. Actually the first was too long and the second was too short. But I'm so glad I did it and don't feel the need to ever do it again.

And then the Winetttes met again for happy hour and dinner. This is such a great group of women and I am so grateful that they are my friends. Moving to Arkansas to take care of Mom and Dad was the best decision I ever made, but moving to Katy is definitely second best.  I used to fret about what was going to happen to me in my old age, but here we all take care of each other. I love my life, my family, and my friends and I thank God daily for all of them.

Election Day

This is the first presidential election day that I voted early and by mail. I have always loved going to the polls on the real day, but I was just afraid it would be too crowded, so took the easy way out. I hope it will be a while before I do it again. However, when I went to visit my second grader, Aiden, this was set up outside the second grade classrooms. I'm so impressed. And when he came out, I asked him if he'd already voted. He said yes and his first question to me was who did I vote for. I explained that voting is private and you don't have to tell anyone who you vote for. But I did ask him and he replied, "Hilary Clinton." When I asked why I was surprised by his response. He said he saw on a commercial that the man was going to explode America.  Not trying to defend Trump, I told him that TV commercials aren't always true and I feel certain that the one he saw is not (don't want kids living in fear). He was pretty skeptical, but at least he listened. And I don't know what else to say except, God bless America!

Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day

I didn't have anything with this combination, but did have almonds and chocolate, so I just ate them together. Yum!

My stomach has been in knots all day and I know it's election related. And this is extremely selfish, but one of my biggest fears is about the stock market. So I voted for the candidate that I feel will have the least impact. I just had to narrow it all down to a reason that affected me, and I hope I'm right. My prayers are strictly for God to bless America and for us to avoid conflict.

Daylight Saving Time Ends

Why, oh why is this so hard every single year? Personally I'd love to see Daylight Saving Time go away permanently. And if you ask me, the only people keeping it going are lobbyists. If it wasn't about money we wouldn't even have it. Although truth be told, I'm not sure who's winning on this one. I've just figured out in my old age that everything is about money... slow learner.

Three friends and I were going to see Jack Reacher this afternoon, but the only seats left were on the front row... NOT! Then tried another movie with the same results. Could have something to do with the facts that the Texans had a bye this week and it was raining. So we went back to one lady's house and drank wine while playing Rummikub. Personally, I think I enjoyed the game more than I would have the movie.

And now it's dark and rainy and I can't get the dogs to go pee or poop. But I won't give up till bedtime and we still have a couple of hours. Oh, the trials of motherhood!

Bank Transfer Day

I bet you're excited to hear about this one! Bank Transfer Day encourages bank customers to transfer their cash out of big banks to credit unions. When I moved to Katy I asked Sharon's son-in-law, Sam, who was Chairman of the Board of the local Chamber of Commerce, where to put my money. I explained that I absolutely did not want a megabank and was interested in more of a neighborhood bank. He suggested a particular credit union and I joined up immediately. And more than two years later, I'm still delighted with his recommendation. So although I didn't actually make the transfer today, I did reconcile my online checkbook.

And I was remiss in not recognizing Gretchen's birthday yesterday. Happy birthday, dear friend!

Candy Day

What luck! Remember the candy corn and peanuts I had for Halloween? And remember how I said I had to put it away until today so I could give it all to my cleaning lady? Well, I never put it out of sight and therefore have eaten some every day. So imagine my surprise when today was Candy Day! I'm really not a candy eater, but I had more candy corn as well as a peanut butter cup. And my cleaning lady got a very small bag of candy corn. It was a good week!

Sandwich Day

Thanks to Peanut Butter and Jelly Day way back in April, I now have a favorite sandwich. And to think, I never would have known this had it not been for this silly blog idea I had. It's all been worth if for that, if nothing else. So obviously, that was my lunch.

I learned something this morning... when I walk the dogs, I should wear my bifocals. We came across two loose dogs this morning having the time of their lives. They both had tags on and of course, came to say hello to my pack, so I reached down to get a tag and couldn't read anything on it! What to do, what to do? We were on a busy street and I thought about it for awhile before realizing that there was nothing I could do. So reluctantly, we slowly started walking away when a pickup truck stopped and a man got out. I asked if the dogs were his and, through his anger, he said yes. Problem was, he couldn't catch them. They both acted just like Glory when she's loose. Chase is the best game in town. The man only sent them running through traffic to the other side of the street, but they were just too curious about my guys, so came running right back. The man still couldn't get them, but as they came up to Glory and Simon, I grabbed both of their collars. He dragged them back to the truck but realized he couldn't put one in without letting go of the other. I asked to help, so held one while he tossed the other into the bed of the truck. He did the same with the buddy and then finally offered a weak "thank you" before driving off in a huff.  But I'm glad I was able to help. The dogs deserved it even if he didn't.

All Souls Day

I had to do a little research on this one to distinguish it from All Saints Day which was yesterday.  And what I learned is this... On All Saints' Day there's a call to live as saints, to remind us how we're supposed to live. On All Souls' Day, we're talking about all souls and asking God's mercy for them. In Catholicism, one involves souls in Purgatory, but I'm confused as to which one. Suffice it to say that I celebrate the lives of Mom and Dad today, as well as all other relatives who have passed on.

And here is what I learned in my yoga class this morning. The wind releasing pose which I've giggled about earlier is actually to help our digestive systems. When lying on your back and pulling the right knee to your chest, you're stretching the ascending colon. And the left leg stretches the descending colon. And when you pull in both knees, the transverse colon is being stretched. Thankfully I've never released any wind during these poses, but I'm glad to learn they have a healthful purpose. Good information, right?

Cook for You Pets Day

Another easy one... I cook for myself almost every day, thereby cooking for the dogs as well. That's because they always get a little tidbit from what I ate for an appetizer before their dinner. I never gave any of my dogs people food until Mom moved in with me and then it was a lost cause. She would feed them from the table and more than once I caught her putting her dinner plate on the floor for them. What's a dog mom to do? So I broke them from expecting food from the table and still give them a bite at the end. So shoot me.

I woke up this morning with a knot in my stomach because it's finally hit me that I'm not going to like our next president. And it matters not who wins... I find them equally despicable. I can't even imagine listening to either of their voices for the next four years. I'm not happy with who I voted for, but neither would I have been happy had I voted for the other. It almost made me sick to mark that box. And to make matters worse... my birthday is the day after the election. So I'm planning a party which will begin at 11 AM so I don't have to think about it for at least one day. God bless America!

Halloween

This is my least favorite holiday all year... it ranks even lower than Columbus Day. So I celebrated by eating more candy corn with peanuts. We don't get any trick-or-treaters in our neighborhood, which is one of the biggest perks of living in a retirement community. And I canceled my tutoring session with Thomas this afternoon because I know he's excited about today (he had to show me his costume last week), so I told his Mom it would probably be a waste of her money. Fortunately, she agreed.

I spent at least three hours on the phone with Comcast today working on network connection problems, only to finally be told I need to go to the store and trade my modem for a new one. I should have just done that to begin with because I've been there so often recently that they know me and are very patient. Old age has several perks that I certainly use to my advantage.

Candy Corn Day

I never liked candy corn until a teacher in Heber Springs brought some to school on Halloween mixed with peanuts. Oh my gosh, it's delicious... a perfect blend of sweet and salty. She brought it every year and even after I retired, she'd put aside a cupful for me and I'd swing by the school to pick it up. Once I left I forgot all about it, until today. So I went to the store and picked up a bag along with a can of peanuts and made my own. And this is a disaster in the making because I can't stop eating it. I convinced myself that since my cleaning lady comes on Friday, I'd give the rest to her, but the hard part will be not eating it between now and then. I suppose I'll have to hide it on the top shelf of the pantry and then, of course, I'll forget it's there and find it in six months or so... and the cycle will begin again. So my advice to you is, if you've never tried it... DON'T!

Oatmeal Day

It really wasn't cold enough for oatmeal, but it's always in my pantry, so that was my breakfast and it was delicious.

I went to Krause House this afternoon for activities with all the girls. We made pumpkins and they each wrote good qualities about themselves and cut them into the shapes of pumpkin seeds to put into their pumpkins. Then we told them that whenever they're feeling down, to take the seeds out and read them as a reminder of how great they are.

Tonight was a super fun Halloween party hosted by a remarkable woman named Linda. She hasn't been in our group long, but was in the dinner group at first and then because I liked her so much I included her in the Winettes, our Thursday night wine group. After the first couple of times I noticed that she only drank iced tea. I mentioned it to another friend who told me that Linda is an alcoholic who attends meetings on a regular basis. I was stunned and amazed. She also has MS and walks with a noticeable limp. But she loves being in the group and isn't bothered by our drinking. She's the one in the spider web costume sitting next to me. What a woman and a role model!

Chocolate Day

I know, haven't we had this before? But actually I've celebrated Chocolate Mousse Day and Dark Chocolate Day and probably other variations, but I'm sure not complaining. And while on our evening walk, I realized that I only need six things to be happy... family, friends, dogs, good food, wine, and chocolate. I had five out of the six this evening and feel pretty damned good right now. And I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving at Rob's house when I'll have all except the dogs. I'm very blessed and truly love my life. Peace, out.

Navy Day

This is is a day to salute all of the women and men who have served, both past and present, in the United States Navy. So today I honor all those people by wearing navy blue (I know, that's pretty lame). And to explain the photo, we had wine night this evening and went to the one place that serves extra large glasses and where I always get a little buzz on. After we came home, one friend wanted to walk the dogs with me and when we were almost home I looked down and saw my shoes. Neither one of us had noticed and amazingly, I didn't even notice the different feel. The gray ones are very cushy and the white ones, not so much. How embarrassing!

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. This week is for us all to take a stand for our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America. Red Ribbon Week has been observed in every school I've taught in and is still ongoing. Each year has a different theme and there are dress up days with events and assemblies to get the kids' attention  While I was at the elementary school this afternoon, they were having an assembly with some of the Houston Rockets talking to the kids about drugs, as well as performing tricks for their entertainment. It's a super program, especially since they start it in kindergarten. Obviously it doesn't help them all, but it sure doesn't hurt and I believe in the long run, it saves lives.

Greasy Food Day

How interesting that this day follows Food Day when you're supposed to eat healthy. I think they should be reversed. I don't eat fried foods anymore (only because they give me a stomach ache), but did have rotisserie chicken for dinner... one of my favorite staples. I usually remove the skin, which I love, so was happy to keep it attached today. Nobody makes barbecued chicken like my daddy, but this is pretty darned good.

This afternoon I had my first secondary cataract removed. My vision may or may not improve and I won't know for 48 hours, but I'm always hopeful, and yet have low expectations. It didn't get any better after my cataracts were removed, but I'm always willing to take the chance. I'd really like to keep my vision steady for four more years when I have to renew my driver's license.  That will be a huge milestone if I make it. If not, maybe we'll have driverless cars by then. If not, grocery stores deliver now and there's Uber, so I won't be stranded. Time will tell.

Food Day

When I first saw this, I was so excited... any food I wanted? And then, sadly, I read what it was about. Food Day is all about “cutting back on sugar drinks, overly salted packaged foods and fatty, factory-farmed meats in favor of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and sustainably raised protein.” I'm super glad this was on a Monday after a weekend of junk food because I always behave myself on Mondays, which I did today. I won't bore you with the list of healthy foods I had, but believe me, I celebrated Food Day correctly.

Thomas and I are working on multiplication tables... God bless us all!

TV Talk Show Host Day

So many hosts, so little time. I love talk shows because I can play games on my iPad while watching (listening). I record many talk shows and these are my favorites: Stephen Colbert, Ellen, James Corden, and Harry Connick, Jr. Harry's show is new and I love it because he sings and interacts with the audience for most of the show. I've watched Ellen since her first season, which began in September 2003. That was a month after Dad died and I recorded it on Mom's TV every day so we could watch it together while we ate dinner every evening. I've watched it ever since and still love her humor. Stephen Colbert and James Corden are the only two nighttime shows I record and they both can make me laugh out loud.

Changing the subject, one of the few perks of being over 65 is that I can now vote by mail. I spent more than two hours on the Internet this morning Googling all the candidates running in my precinct. I didn't know most of them, hence my dependence on Google. But I feel very good in my selections, except for president. That was the box I left for last because I'm not happy with who I voted for, but nor would have been happy with the opposition. And I'm telling no one who I chose because regardless of who wins, I won't like with the outcome. Let's face it, we have two crappy choices... a crook or a crazy man. And my birthday is the day after election day. How sucky is that?

Make a Difference Day

I sometimes I feel like I'm cheating when I don't go above and beyond my usual activities. but since today was my scheduled visit with Brianna, I'm using it. We're allowed to bring them lunch once a month, so today I stopped by McDonald's on the way. I'm delighted that's her favorite place because it's cheap and nearby. My other girls always had more exotic tastes, so this is a breeze. And she was so happy because I was visiting her for lunch and her grandpa is coming tomorrow. Also, she said she saw what they were having for lunch and it was "nasty," so she really appreciated her burger and fries. And she said her unit went to school every day this week and no one got into trouble, so they were having movie night today and free time tomorrow to do whatever they want. It really felt good to see her so happy. She's such a sweetheart!

I'll be playing Trivia tonight at the clubhouse, but don't expect to win any prizes because I'll have four subs (out of eight) on my team. They might surprise me, but we'll have a good time regardless. I'll let you know how it goes.

Garbanzo Bean Day

Good one! I love hummus and before I even knew what I'd be celebrating today, I had hummus for lunch. How I love hummus and normally even make my own, but occasionally get a little lazy and buy some. I bought a very large container at Costco not too long ago and enjoy it several times a week. Best use of garbanzo beans there is, in my opinion. And I'm glad they have their own day.

I really appreciate the comments I had for yesterday's post. I put it on Facebook, too, after much deliberation with myself. But it's something I feel strongly about and although I realize many people who read it may not agree with me, at least I got no negative responses. Love is love. Let's spread it as far as we can!

Spirit Day

This day is in conjunction with Freedom from Bullies Week. We were to wear purple in a stand against bullying and to show support for LGBTQ youth. I certainly don't have a problem with purple and I've worn it all day to show my support for these kids.  Rarely, if ever, have I spoken out on a controversial issue in this blog, but today I make an exception.

I'm the first to admit that I don't understand homosexuality or bisexuality or transvestites. But that doesn't mean I don't accept and love them as my equals. God never appointed me or any other person to the Judging Committee... He is the only member and I put my faith in His hands. And I really don't get why so many people judge these people, because they were created by God, as we all were, and God doesn't make mistakes (although I sure don't like mosquitoes or fleas). Adolescents have so much to deal with under normal circumstances, but when they feel different, all bets are off and sadly, only the bravest survive.  I pray that someday we will all learn to accept anyone who is different from us, whether it be through skin color or religious preference or sexuality, and love them as we love all God's children. Isn't that what Jesus would do?
